Keep A Lid On It

Good sun protection should start at the top—of your head—with a good full-brim lid.

A sun hat that doesn’t flip up in a breeze? That’s the Arntson Tahoe Brim Hat claim. So, we tested it aboard a powerboat—28 mph, and still no lift-off. This thing works. It’s done with an ingenious brim construction that includes a thin wire around the perimeter coupled with a foam and laminated plastic layer inboard of that. But it’s not just stiffness that makes this hat brim special. Krak Arntson, who designed the product, says there is also an aerodynamic component to the brim. “Once you put on the hat, it changes the shape of the brim, making it sort of like an airplane wing.”

The Tahoe Brim Hat features two adjustments, both of which can be done one-handed: a chinstrap (which is removable) and a 360-degree tensioner to adjust fit. The tensioner is made of shock cord, requiring very little pull to achieve the correct fit, and on the front of the hat, the shock cord transitions to a flat strip for a more comfortable forehead fit.

Made from a nylon oxford material, it has a quick-dry finish, provides 98-percent UV block, floats and is crushable for easy packing. Two sizes: S-M and L-XL. $54. Arntsonmarine.com
